Description
I recently got a NAS and wanted to backup my entire Blu-ray and DVD collection to view them via Jellyfin. However, my PC only has two 5.25” bays, which is not ideal. To speed things up, I decided to buy some 9.5mm Slim Blu-ray and cheap DVD Laptop drives from eBay to rip multiple discs with MakeMKV at once.
To achieve this, I had to design a nice case that fits as many slim drives as possible into a 5.25” bay. And here it is, 3 optical drives per 5.25” bay! The 9.5mm slim drives are standard, so any of them (Pioneer, LG, Hitachi, HP, LiteOn, …) should fit inside the modules.
Easy installation:
The top, middle, and bottom modules have small lateral pegs that will fit inside the screw holes of the optical drives.
Just bend the module a little bit and insert the drive. After that, stack them accordingly (top, middle, bottom) and put the screws in. I use cheap slimline adapters for the power and normal SATA cables to attach the drives to the motherboard. If you don’t have enough SATA ports on your motherboard just buy a cheap PCIe adapter card with SATA ports.
Ripping:
Lately, streaming platforms have quietly begun censoring older films to fit modern political correctness and other BS (no kidding there's a special Netflix edit of Back to the Future). Physical media protects your favourite movies from being altered or deleted. I use MakeMKV to rip the main movie + audio tracks and subtitles. I don't use handbrake to re-compress because HDDs are huge these days. For display I use jellyfin, it's really easy, free and does hardware encoding/decoding too. Installing it on the UGREEN NAS is pretty simple through their appstore. I put all the links as reference to the parts down below.
