Alvin Cullum York (1887–1964), famously known as Sergeant York, was one of the most decorated United States Army soldiers of World War I. A Tennessee blacksmith and expert marksman, he initially sought conscientious objector status due to his Christian faith but ultimately became a national hero for his extraordinary actions during the Meuse-Argonne offensive in France
