Description
NOTE:
This part has been re-designed 12/10/25.
I recently broke out the 7800 to play some new homebrews and my coupler cracked at the point where the retaining levers attach to the main body of the coupler. It a high stress point, so I redesigned the part to be more compliant. The retaining arms now "Float" over the floor with a 0.24mm gap in between. It's much easier to insert and remove the controllers and much less prone to cracking. Just use regular supports as always and break away the tiny, 1 layer support walls after printing.
The old version still exists as:
"7800 Controller Coupler"
and the new version is:
"Atari 7800 Controller Coupler - REDESIGN 2'"
Yes, there is a REDESIGN 1 and I've added that to the download list, but this 1st redesign version, while using less filament, isn't as sturdy and I only recommended printing it for mounting on a block of wood. I don't think it will hold up to a fierce game of Robotron on it's own.
Finally got a 7800 and now must play Robotron 2048 the proper way - with a dual controller setup. Not happy with any of the offerings I've seen elsewhere, I made my own.
This unit cradles the controller body almost perfectly and the rear clip is sturdy and keeps the controller locked in place. The flat, flanged bottom is perfect for mounting on a piece of plywood or other board and there're screw holes built into the design for a sturdy, screwed down installation. Of course, mounting is not necessary. I am currently using this just held in my 2 hands and using the sticks with my thumbs.
Printed in PLA, the back clips flex and must be pinched to allow the controllers to slide-in or be released. The rounded corners and non friction fit will not blemish the controllers at any sharp points.
