The HD.29 weapon system, the military designation of the NH90 in the Air Force, is operated by the 803rd Squadron of the 48th Wing from October 2020, replacing the HD.21 (AS332 Super Puma), which was in service from 1982 to 2021. Since the arrival of the first NH90 on October 16, 2020, the 48th Wing personnel have made a major effort to implement the new weapon system in the unit, fly more than 700 hours day and night and meet all milestones set out in its implementation plan, in order to achieve Initial Operational Capability by January 1, 2022. This enables the 803rd Squadron to cover the SAR alarm of the SRR (Search and Rescue Region) Madrid with the NH90 which, since the creation of the Squadron in 1954, has been developed with more than a dozen aircraft, the last one being the HD.21 (AS332 Super Puma).
