Description

This is a simple train fidget toy I designed for a design challenge in my DFAM (Design for Additive Manufacturing) class this week.

The design challenge was to take 2 hours and design a fidget toy. My son adores trains, so this was my knee jerk reaction. I wanted the wheels to spin freely so I included a print-in-place bearing. Since I had time left over after making the bearing, I added a two-tone train whistle to the top of the engine. I hope you enjoy it as much as my son does!

Features:

  • Print-in-place needle bearing for each set of wheels
  • (loud) two-tone train whistle

Assembly guide:

  1. Before attaching the wheels, use a screwdriver, allen key, etc. to push the axles into the train engine (they're constrained and won't pop out of the train). You might have to push with some force to break them free.
  2. Re-center the axles and fit the wheels in. Depending on your filament choices it might be a press fit, but if not dab a SMALL amount of superglue onto the square peg before inserting it in the hole. Make sure not to glue the axle to the main body of the train!
  3. Enjoy! The more you play with it, the looser the bearings will get. I have one at work that spins super smoothly now that I've been playing with it for a while.
