Map to My Heart – Wall Frame

Celebrate your most cherished locations with this stunning wall-mounted frame. Combining intricate 3D map details with sleek design, it turns meaningful places into timeless art for your home. With its refined size (32 cm x 22 cm) and modern aesthetic, this frame enhances any space, offering a unique blend of personalization and style. Whether it’s a heartfelt gift or a special keepsake for yourself, this design will be treasured for years to come.

Here’s exactly how to do it:

Step 1: Create and Print Your Custom Map Topography

  1. Visit Touch Mapper Start by visiting Touch Mapper, a tool designed to create 3D printable maps of your chosen location.
  2. Scroll Down to Enter the Address
    • On the main page, scroll down until you find the field where you can enter the desired street address of your meaningful location.
    • Enter the address and confirm the location on the map preview.
  3. Enable Advanced Options
    • Click “Show advanced options (also hides location marker)” to unlock the customization settings.
    • Enable multipart map option: Check “Print a part of a multipart map” to divide the map into sections.
  4. Set the Map Dimensions Use the following settings for the first map (your central point):
    • Custom print size: Set this to 10 cm.
    • Custom scale: Choose 1:4000 (if you want it more zoomed in, scale down), which will display an area of approximately 400 meters around your chosen location.

Step 2: Generate and Download Map Sections

Your map will be divided into multiple smaller sections to fit the larger wall frame. Each section must be created individually by adjusting the coordinates in Touch Mapper.

  1. Start with the Central Section
    • Enter your address to create the central map section.
    • This section will have the coordinates 0x, 0y.
    • Once ready, download the STL file. If you want the heart printed directly with the map, import it to the map in Bambu Studio and print it in one go. (Since the drop of Map to my heart Touchmapper have had some more traffic, this can result in waiting time. When you generate your map the site can just say calculating. Give the site time, it means many people are asking for maps at the same time.
  2. Adjust the custom print size to 5x5 cm Sections for the Surrounding Parts Keep the chosen scale at 1:4000 and use these coordinates for the 5x5 cm sections:
    • -50x, -150y (Top-left middle corner), download the STL file.
    • +50x, -150y (Top-right middle corner), download the STL file.
    • +50x, +150y (Bottom-right middle corner), download the STL file.
    • -50x, +150y (Bottom-left middle corner), download the STL file.
  3. Switch Back to Custom print size 10x10 cm to Finish the Outer Corners Use these coordinates for the 10x10 cm sections:

    • -100x, +50y (Far-left center), download the STL file.
    • -100x, -50y (Far-left bottom), download the STL file.
    • +100x, -50y (Far-right bottom), download the STL file.
    • +100x, +50y (Far-right center), download the STL file.

In total, you should now have 9 maps: 5 at the 10x10 cm scale and 4 at the 5x5 cm scale.

  4. Verify Alignment Double-check the files to ensure they align properly. If needed, adjust positions or start over from the central section to ensure accuracy.
  5. Tips for Printing the Map
    • Use a layer thickness of 0.25–0.3 mm for optimal results.
    • The base of the map is 0.6 mm thick, printable in two layers.
    • Use two top layers and one horizontal shell for a solid finish.
    • Print the top layer at a slower speed for a smooth surface.
  6. Remove the Cone Marker (if necessary) If the cone marker on Touch Mapper doesn’t disappear, follow these steps provided by @radeczek:
    • In the objects menu, click on Object > Divide into Parts.
    • Delete the first object to remove the marker.

Step 3: Print the Frame and Heart

  1. Choose Your Frame Design
    • The included file contains two frame designs: one with customizable text and one without but both with holes for wall hanging. The frame without text is pre-split and ready to print across two plates.
  2. Customizing the Frame with Text  - It was not possible to upload to Makerworld so I will find a workaround and come back with it. For now you will have to ad the text by yourself.
  3. If you want to use the frame with text, follow these steps:
    • The model includes two text boxes, one above and one below the frame. If you only need one, delete the other by:
      • Going to the Objects menu in your slicer software.
      • Right-clicking on the text box that matches the text on the frame and selecting Delete.
    • To edit the text, select the appropriate text box in the Objects menu. Type your custom text directly.
    • If you want to change the font or size, adjust these settings as needed. Note that resizing may require you to manually re-center the text.
  4. Splitting the Frame Once your text customization is complete, split the frame for printing:
    • Press F to reorient the frame so it lies on its side.
    • Use the Cut tool to divide the frame into two parts.
    • Add connectors for easier assembly after printing:
      • Select Add Connectors and position two connectors at the split area.
      • Use the settings provided in the included PDF for proper placement.
      • Confirm the connector placement by clicking Confirm Connectors.
    • Execute the split operation.
  5. Preparing for Printing
    • After splitting, the frame parts will be stacked.
    • Click on the build plate to reselect the frame parts, then move one part away from the other.
    • The frame is now ready for printing.
  6. Printing Recommendations
    • The split frame can be printed without supports. However, if your connector settings differ, you may need to enable supports.
    • Follow the steps carefully to ensure a seamless assembly of the frame post-printing.

Step 4: Assemble the Map, Frame, and Heart

  1. Attach the Map to the Frame
    • Use adhesive to carefully secure the printed map inside the frame.
    • For extra support you can use adhesive to secure the both framesides together aswell.
  2. Position and Attach the Heart
    • Place the heart on the map to mark the exact location of your special memory. Once positioned, glue it in place for a professional finish.

Tips for Success

  • Use contrasting filament colors for the frame, map, and heart to make your design stand out beautifully.
  • Preview your print in Bambu Studio to ensure everything is perfectly aligned before slicing.
  • Double-check the settings in Touch Mapper to ensure the map fits the frame dimensions.

Tips for more customization

  • While in Bambu Studio, before printing your map, click on Object and then right-click the map in the object field. Select Split and then Split Into Parts. This will divide the map into smaller sections, allowing you to locate specific buildings or streets and assign them unique colors. While this requires extra effort, it’s absolutely worth it for those aiming for maximum customization. I will try to ad a video that showes this step by step.
