Compact A4 Railway (Electric train set)

January 27, 2025
Description
Introduction
Electric train models have always been one of the toys I’ve wanted, but due to space constraints, I haven’t been able to display such large toys.
At the end of last year, I purchased the A1 mini and began learning 3D modeling. When I came across this competition, I thought, “Why not design a small electric train that doesn’t require much space to play with?”
If you're interested in desktop toys, the Compact A4 Railway would be a great choice!
Features
- Can be printed with A1 mini.
- The smallest operating area is smaller than an A4 sheet of paper (compared to other train toys, it offers more fun in the same space!)
- Modular assembly, no AMS required to create multi-colored models (the tracks can use pause printing to change colors)
- Realistic track design, not only aesthetically pleasing but also material-saving
- Compatible with parts from the Endless Loop Express Kit
BOM
Item | Qty |
N20 Dual Shaft Worm Gear Motor 130rpm | 1 PCS |
AAA Battery Spring Contact Plate with PH2.0 Connector | 1 PCS |
Self-Locking Button Switch | 1 PCS |
M2x6 FHCS (Machine Screw) | 2 PCS |
100mm Y type PH2.0 to Dual SH1.0 Conversion Wire | 1 PCS |
Filament and Printing
The tires are printed using TPU and printed piece by piece, while the other parts are printed using PLA.
Without AMS, to print the dual-color tracks, you can pause the print at a Z height of 2mm and change the color.
Assembly Guide
Locomotive
- Pay attention to the assembly direction of the Battery Spring Contact Plate, switch, and motor.
- Use the tires with tread patterns for the front wheels.
- Due to the compact structure, after installing the Battery Spring Contact Plate and battery, fold the metal plate inward carefully. Make sure not to break the wires.
- If there are assembly issues caused by printing tolerances, you can use a blade to trim or glue parts together.
Note: Do not use glue to assemble the train chassis and body, as it will make battery replacement impossible.

Connecting the Train
Note: In the current version, if X-shaped tracks are not used, it can support up to two carriages at most.

Track Assembly
- The print files provide three different tolerances for the connectors.
- You can assemble the track layout based on your preferences.
Known Issue
The train may sometimes slip when passing through the X-shaped track. This is due to the engine being too light, resulting in insufficient friction. Future updates will attempt to fix this issue.
Postscript
The development process for this project turned out to be much more challenging than I had imagined (slightly beyond my current capabilities). It took a considerable amount of time to revise and reprint the parts.
If you enjoy this project, feel free to Boost me or leave a comment to let me know. If time permits, I will create additional expansion models to enrich this project.
Wishing everyone successful and enjoyable printing!
Boost MeIf you’ve downloaded or printed the model, a Boost would mean a lot to me. Thank you!
