“Bobbing Bobby” buzzes “Benchy” while briskly bouncing between bushes, bobbling beside babbling brooks, boldly bypassing big boulders, & bravely battling brisk breezes.
I now present “Bobbing Bobby”, the Buoyant Benchmark Puddle-jumper Benchy Buzzer!
Bobbing Bobby may not be a fighter… but he's got aggressive overhangs and gnarly bridge testing!!
IGNORE THIS WARNING:
Do NOT let the slicer automatically add supports.
Spinning Propeller:
I recommend carefully cutting around the base of the propeller top pop it loose rather than twisting.
No Supports:
How?? This little guy is designed to be printed on his nose.
Part-Cooling Performance and Overhang Capability are tested by these (see image below) highlighted features:
Bed adhesion is tested by having minimal surface in contact with the build plate:
SERIOUSLY. You might want to consider using a build plate adhesive; cause you're about to find out how reliable your first layer stick is!
Bed adhesion is arguably the most important component of 3D printing; that's why it's included in this benchmark test.
If you just want the plane, feel free to add a raft, brim, or recess the plane into the build plate a little to give yourself a larger starting surface area.👍
Bridging quality is tested in the locations indicated:
Geometric accuracy:
A = 76.2mm
B = 19mm
C = 67mm
D = 14.8mm
E = 12.75mm
F = 22mm
G = 2mm
H = 1.5mm
J = 2mm (yes, “i” is skipped intentionally)
L = 2.5mm
Note: Measurable dimensions are the same as the original “Bobby”.
Improvements Made:
Added drain holes to bottom of fuselage.
Added ballast to pontoons.
Updated pontoons with three ribs running front to back (see image below) to be more stable so it doesn't flip over as easily! (Depending on the density of the filament used, Bobby's balance varies; I've tested with PETG-HF and PLA Basic.)
Added a toddler-resistant version with thicker members connecting the pontoons! Compare images below:
The beloved 3DBenchy has a special place in all our hearts. Why? It's cute, it's quick, it's useful, it's repeatable, it's comparable, it's measurable; and it will always WOW a toddler and grandparents alike. Thank you, Daniel Norée, for creating the 3DBenchy which we've all come to love; but alas, even legends fade.
I think it's time we consider another contestant who's a little younger than ye olde tugboat…
