Gridfinity Thickness 'Gauges'

Recently when designing a model I was having trouble deciding how thick to make a wall. Looking at marks on a ruler wasn't adequate, I needed something more tactile. So I slapped together a couple of quick tiles for a few different sizes, and finished my project.

Over the following weeks I found that I was constantly reaching for those few tiles as I designed other things. Finally, I decided to do a proper job of it, and make a complete set and a Gridfinity base for them to sit in.

 

Of course, calling these ‘gauges’ is something of a stretch. The actual accuracy of the sizes will depend on how well your printer is calibrated and the slicer settings you choose. Mine came out better than one-tenth of a mm accurate, which is far more than necessary for the intended use! 

 

This model has 15 tiles from 1mm to 8mm thick, in ½ mm increments. If you have an AMS, there is a set of tiles with the label text embedded right in the tile bodies. If you do not have an AMS, there is another set with the label text debossed into the surface of the tiles. Samples of both flavors are pictured - choose whichever suits your needs.

 

The base is a standard Gridfinity block, 1 x 3 x 3u (that 3u is about 21mm tall, and will sit about 17mm above the top of your Gridfinity panel.

 

The filaments I used for the one pictured are Bambu Lab PLA Matte Marine Blue, Polymaker PLA Matte Cotton White, Polymaker PLA Matte Forest Green, and SUNLU PLA Matte Gray.
