Description
Italy has a varied and complex topography, characterized by mountains, hills and plains. The Alps in the north form an imposing natural barrier, while the Apennines cross the peninsula from north to south. The largest plains are the Po Valley in the north and the coastal plains along the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic Seas. The territory is rich in volcanoes, including Vesuvius, Etna and Stromboli. Italy is also surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, with numerous islands such as Sicily and Sardinia.
