A Magnetic Bit Holder!

(like as if we haven't seen that before)

I got this idea from a fancy expensive aluminum one that I've had for years, but it only came in one size, and I wanted a few more options. So I came up with this, I haven't seen one quite like this on here so I figured I would share it.

  • It uses 3x10mm magnets, with a length of either 20mm or 40mm. Either size will work for all varieties.

  • The size options range from 40mm with 8 bit slots, up to 160mm with 32 bit slots!

  • Strong enough to hold most ¼" bits even upside down, I've been using it for a few weeks on my tool cart stuck to the underside of a lid, with no lost bits.

As far as magnet orientation, I did some testing and found that an alternating pattern like a checkerboard seems to give the best holding strength, and also the easiest to set up. (See poorly made picture below)

The magnets just slide in the slots from the end, alternate each one you slide into the slot, then add a drop of superglue or whatever glue you like to the end to lock them in. It's not necessary to glue all of the magnets in, a drop on each end should do for most situations.

Of course, you can use it without magnets as well.

For printing, the only note is that it prints best upside down (bit holes down) on it's face, as it's set up in the print profile. Otherwise the overhangs create some droop into the magnet slots that make the magnets hard to install.

3x10x20mm Magnet stats:

  • 40mm, 8 slots, uses 4x magnets
  • 80mm, 16 slots, uses 8x magnets
  • 120mm, 24 slots, uses 12x magnets
  • 160mm, 32 slots, uses 16x magnets

Enjoy! And may your bits be always organized
