I designed this lighted sign as a personalized birthday party favor, but it could also be an individual gift. The model can be customized online to show any name or word(s) and at virtually any size. There is an optional hole for a toggle switch. The colors are also customizable.
Printing Tip. For 1" (25 mm) tall lettering, a 44 mm box height works well. If the lettering contains lowercase letters with parts below the baseline (g, j, p, q, and y), then a 52 mm box height is better.
Required Non-Printed Materials (All products shown or mentioned are items that I actually use and have found to work well. I have no relationship with any product supplier.)
5V chip-on-board (COB) LED strip — for example, Amazon
USB-C female connector breakout board — this must have small resistors mounted onboard as required by USB-C power supplies; otherwise, the power supply will think nothing is connected and shut itself off; for example, Amazon
Hookup wire — I used 26 gauge stranded copper wire
(2) M2 self-tapping pan head screws, 6 mm length; for example, Amazon
Toggle switch (optional) — subminiature size for mounting in a 5 mm hole, smaller than the more common switches for a ¼" (6.35 mm) hole
3M VHB double sided tape, 10 mm or ½" wide (optional) — for stronger adhesion of LED strip; for example, Amazon
USB-C 5V power supply with cable, such as a cell phone charger
Assembly Instructions
Step 1. Cut a length of LED strip to fit inside back cover. Solder wires at one end.Step 2. Glue USB-C breakout board into slot of back cover. I used 5-minute epoxy, but cyanoacrylate glue (Super Glue) would also work.Step 3. Secure toggle switch in hole in back cover with provided nuts. Apply double sided tape of same length as LED strip.Step 4. Stick LED strip to double sided tape or directly to back cover. Solder LED’s +5V pad to breakout board’s VBUS signal via the toggle switch. Solder LED’s minus (–) pad to breakout board’s GND signal.Step 5. Insert back cover’s top edge into the sign box’s mating channel. Secure bottom with two M2 screws.
