Ratchet Instrument

A ratchet or rattle, more specifically a cog rattle, is a fascinating percussion instrument that operates on the principle of a ratchet mechanism. Using a gearwheel and a stiff board mounted on a handle that rotates freely, it produces an unmistakable clicking and rattling sound. Link to video of rattle for sound.

The design is simple, lightweight (just 50 grams!) and intuitive, it is easy to assemble and fun to use.

How You Can Use It:

  • Add Unique Sounds to Your Music: Perfect for musicians looking to experiment or add distinctive rhythmic effects to their compositions.
  • Fun Fidget Toy: With its tactile motion and satisfying sound, this cog rattle doubles as a playful fidget toy for stress relief or just for fun.
  • A Funny Gift Idea: Give it as a gift to the kids of someone you don’t like—it’s guaranteed to keep them entertained (and definitely annoy their parents).
  • Religious festivals: Often used in the Jewish holiday of Purim, this model makes for an easy print to help celebrate.

A Glimpse into Its Historical Uses:

  • Music: The rattle is used in such compositions as Richard Strauss's Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks and Arnold Schoenberg's Gurre-Lieder. Respighi asks for one in the first movement of his orchestral work Pini di Roma (Pines of Rome), as does Tchaikovsky in his ballet, The Nutcracker. It is also used in "Gnomus" in Ravel's orchestration of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. In orchestral percussion, a ratchet is often used as a substitute for other rhythmic or mechanical sound effects, adding a distinctive texture to the music.
  • Warning & Signalling Device: Ratchets were once critical tools for safety. They were used in the trenches of World War I and by British police and ARP wardens during World War II to signal poison gas attacks.
  • Sports Noisemaker: In the mid-20th century, these ratchets, known as football rattles, were popular among football and rugby fans in the United Kingdom, adding excitement and atmosphere to matches.
  • In Judaism: The gragger (also grogger or gregger; from Yiddish גראַגער) is used for the holiday of Purim. The gragger is used every time Haman's name is mentioned during the reading of the Megillah. Because Haman persecuted the Jews, the noise is supposed to symbolically drown out his name (although every word of the Megillah, including Haman's name, must be heard clearly; therefore, the words are often repeated after the sounding of the gragger). The gragger originated in Jewish tradition to help make noise during the reading.

This modern take on a classic instrument offers endless possibilities—whether for music, play, religious festivals or a nod to history. Start printing and enjoy bringing this timeless design to life!

Assembly:

  • Step 1: Place a single drop of glue into the triangular hole on the arm and insert the leaver into the hole.
  • Step 2: Insert the cog into the arm ensuring the holes are lined up.
  • Step 3: Line up the spine of the cog and handle and insert the handle into the hole through the arm and cog.
  • Step 4: Place a single drop of glue into the hole at the top of the handle and insert the pin.
  • Step 5: Enjoy!
