✅ Download the upgrade printing profile there to adapt your design, print only the adapter for compatibility here and just print launcher if you don’t need a propeller.
This isn’t just a toy—it’s a precision-engineered spinning top, designed for maximum spin time and unmatched stability. After many prototypes and countless adjustments, this top has been fine-tuned to perfection. Thanks to advanced physics-based optimizations, this top can spin for 2.5 + minutes, making it one of - if not the - longest-spinning tops on MakerWorld!
🥇 1st Place: @mccumbem – ⏳ 3:39 minutes
🥈 2nd Place: @user_3995617459 – ⏳ 2:50 minutes
🥉 3rd Place: @UniversalMaker – ⏳ 2:28 minutes
Think you can beat the record? Print your own and post your best time! (I will update the ranking) 🚀🔥
🌀 Optimized Inertia: The core is hollow, while the heavy outer ring concentrates mass at the edges to maximize rotational inertia. This ensures that more energy is stored in the spin and less is lost over time.
💨 Aerodynamic Efficiency: The ultra-thin top and bottom shells minimize air resistance, reducing drag and allowing the top to maintain speed longer.
📏 Low Center of Gravity: The pointed tip is positioned extremely close to the ground, reducing wobbling and keeping the top stable for extended periods.
🔧 Support-Free Handle: The handle is designed to be pressed in after printing, eliminating the need for supports and ensuring a clean, efficient print.
No need to just take my word for it—watch it spin and see the physics in action! (note I started the spinning ~3s before the start of the timer)
This top is engineered using key principles of rotational physics:
1. Maximized Rotational Inertia (Moment of Inertia, III)
- The moment of inertia is defined as:
I=∑mr2I = m r^2I=∑mr2
where m is mass and r is the distance from the rotation axis.- By concentrating most of the mass at the outer edge, the top stores more rotational energy compared to a solid design of the same weight. This makes it more efficient in both material use and rotational performance.
- The result? A significantly longer spin time!
2. Reduced Air Drag
- Air resistance is a major factor limiting spin time.
- The thin shells on top and bottom minimize the surface area exposed to airflow, reducing drag forces.
- A lower profile also prevents turbulent airflow from slowing down the spin.
3. Lower Friction at the Tip
- The pointed tip reduces the contact area with the surface, minimizing friction losses.
- The low center of gravity ensures the top stays balanced longer, reducing energy loss from wobbling.
