Description
I have created an extra strong vise where the lead screw pushes and is a 24 mm diameter screw. The jaw opening is about 50 mm wide and I have provided a 25, 50, and 75 mm long clamp zone profile. The threads are a perfect fit and wear in.
UPDATE: I did a clamping test with a load cell and I was able to achieve 250 lbs of force. I did not push the clamp to failure but it felt like a comfortable maximum at this level.
The moving jaw is to be press fit AFTER the main lead screw has been threaded through, you can press fit the moving jaw simply by cranking the lead screw. If it is too tight, then a bit of sanding or lubricant can be used. The trapizodial groove helps keep the jaw aligned but may require some back and forth to wear in. On the first few uses, The sliding jaw may become stuck when clamped tightky against the fixed jaw. This is due to the right tolerances and so a wedge may be needed to pop it loose. I attached a photo example.
The profile calls for the screws to be made in PETG and the vise body and moving jaw to be in PLA. Ultimately, it is up to you but I think both filaments should work. I chose PETG for the screw portions to have a bit more toughness and flexibility as it will experience torsion. I also printed the screws on the sides so the layering is perpendicular to the direction of the load. Please do print them on the side, performance will be better.
