Description

Thoroughly removing the supporting materials before attaching the two shell pieces is crucial for proper assembly and functionality. The shell assembles smoothly when all supporting materials are thoroughly removed.

This 3D model simulates the hatching process of an egg using expanding water beads and the top piece of a real eggshell.  Inside the shell, a cylindrical chamber holds a single layer of water beads. When water is added, the beads expand, generating pressure that pushes an animal figure inside the shell, ultimately causing it to crack and "hatch."

The model includes a bunny duck by default, but you can customize it with any animal by adding a 2mm high negative part, keeping the height within 24mm. It integrates well with PrintMons created by the maker lab, such as a kiwi bird holding a lollipop.

For best results, print the model with PLA filament using tree supports with the "support critical regions only" setting; this ensures easier removal of supporting materials. While PETG can also be used, it presents a higher chance of failure due to its different material properties. It is even more important to fully remove supporting materials for PETG.

This model provides a valuable opportunity for children to engage in scientific inquiry. It encourages kids to explore experimental design and ask meaningful questions, such as:

  1. How does the number of water beads affect the hatching time?
  2. What shape of animal will hatch faster?
  3. How does using different liquids (e.g., water vs. vinegar) influence the hatching process?
  4. How does the type of eggshell impact the hatching time?

By experimenting with these variables, children can develop critical thinking skills, make observations, and draw conclusions in a fun and interactive way.
