THE STORY OF THE FRENCH BULLDOG

The French Bulldog's story begins not in France, but in England during the Industrial Revolution. In the 1850s, lace workers from Nottingham were displaced by mechanization and many relocated to Northern France, bringing their small "toy" bulldogs with them. These compact companions were perfect for keeping on laps and controlling vermin in small workshops.

In France, these English toy bulldogs were crossed with local ratters and terriers, gradually developing the breed's distinctive "bat ears."
