This V-Twin engine is modeled to look like a real combustion engine. It has two pistons filled with magnets arranged at a 45-degree V configuration, just like a classic motorcycle engine. With only a few non-printed parts, this engine can be a cool showpiece or educational model.
Parts Needed:
(8) 10x3mm Magnets (https://a.co/d/fMNUq2M)
(1) Spool of 32 AWG wire (https://a.co/d/f0IfYKZ)
(1) 5mm steel shaft
(2) 20x10.5x6.5mm Limit Switches (https://a.co/d/aYR69rs)
(1) Capacitor (https://a.co/d/6WOV6b1) I used 16x30mm 100v but any will work above 25v
(1) Diode 5A 60V (https://a.co/d/eHbKDk4)
(22) M3 Bolts and Nuts (https://a.co/d/6iKrtME)
(2) 16x5x5mm Bearings (https://a.co/d/390ib2q)
- Put M3 bolts into the base of the coil body before gluing on the cooling fins
- The cooling fans are glued onto the main coil body with the 2mm spacers in between. There is a tab that sticks out on the coil body and a notch on the fins and spacers to align them correctly. The order goes spacer, 28mm fin, spacer, 30mm, spacer, 32mm, spacer, 37mm, spacer, 37mm, spacer, 37mm, spacer, 34mm, spacer, 30mm, cap base, cap.
- Put the valves into the caps (may need to file down the holes) until they slide well.
- Bolt down the caps with M3 bolts.
- Wrap wire in between the cooling fins (when moving onto the next section pass the wire through the outer notch in the fin.
- Push 4 magnets into each piston (may need glue) and attach onto the crankshaft with small screw (not M3 the screws will need to go into the cylinder with the piston.
- Cut the steel rod into 1x30mm, and 2x35mm sections and assemble crankshaft according to the image.
- Press bearing holders and bearings into the holes on the case.
- Bolt down the main coil bodies onto the engine case.
- Insert the pistons into the cylinders.
- Put the shaft through the bearings and glue the case sides onto the case.
- Glue switches onto the back bearing holder.
- Put something heavy into the flywheel then slip on the cover. (I used copper wire)
- Put flywheel and gear onto the crankshaft rod.
Wire the switches, coils, capacitor, and diode together according to the diagram.
