Description
A playful sign that can be flipped to read either open or closed.
This was a rather tough typographic effort since ambigrams often rely on words of similar length but once the idea landed in my head I felt I had to push on until something broke through.
Part of the trick with ambigrams is being selective of the type style that you start with. After a few dead ends with serifs and italicised sans serifs, I eventually came across FF Market, a brushcript designed by H.A. Simon. What caught my eye was his design of the 'n' in 'Open'. It's aesthetically pleasing enough on its own but also offered the opportunity to work a 'C' and an 'l' into its shape in reverse. From there, it was just hours of trial, error, and testing to get to the final result.
I've added string holes to either end of the sign with an inner recess to hide the knot. I hope you enjoy it. Have fun.
