3D Printable Jet Engine

2/7/2025 UPDATE: I have tweaked the latest existing print profile by adding Support for PLA and lowering the layer height to .16 mm. This updated profile is called Support for PLA - Jet Engine Model for Kit-006. This will greatly improve the surface quality of the overhanging surfaces and will improve the fit of the spinning spool parts which will result in less chance of rubbing/friction when spun. I highly recommend this print profile, and it is what I use when I print these engines for myself.

1/2/2024 UPDATE: I have incorporated several minor design improvements to the parts to improve clearances, ease of printing, and ease of assembly. Parts require fewer supports as well. These updates are included in the Jet Engine Model for Kit-006 print profile. The parts from the previous release, now renamed (OLD) Jet Engine Model for Kit-006, are still compatible with these new parts, however, so you don’t have to reprint the whole thing if you don’t want to.

Overview:

A cutaway model of a 2-spool high bypass turbofan. I designed the whole engine from scratch with cues to certain existing engines. For example, I think Rolls-Royce makes the best-looking fans, so there's some resemblance there. Since originally uploading to Thingiverse in 2016, the popularity of this model has grown far beyond expectations. The model has appeared in numerous publications, additive manufacturing expos/conferences, and is (for better or worse) being made and sold by a number of 3rd parties. However, rest assured that this is one of the official sources for this model. A bunch of remixes of this engine are out there, mostly in Thingiverse at the moment, if you are so inclined. I've also designed an alternate fan for this engine that more closely resembles GE and P&W engines. Check it out!

I uploaded a diagram with labels to all parts for reference. For more detailed instructions, the YouTube assembly guide at the bottom of this description walks you through the process.

Please refer to the Excel sheet BOM (Bill of Materials, aka Parts List) below for keeping track of what parts to print.

Parts Required:

The required fasteners (screws, washers, and nuts) and ball bearings are listed below. However, to make your life easier, there is an official hardware kit that includes these components in the Bill of Materials section below.

• Metric machine screw, allen socket cap, 2.5mm x 0.45mm x 10mm (QTY 100)
• Metric flat washer, 2.5mm (QTY 200)
• Metric hex nut, 2.5mm x 0.45mm (QTY 100)
• 6204 open ball bearing 20x47x14 (QTY 2)
• 6003 open ball bearing 17x35x10 (QTY 2)

The jet engine will look great in any filament, but what I recommend is listed in the Bill of Materials section below.
