Hello Makerworld. It's been quite a long time.
I have finally finished the most complex part of university and in the free time i wanted to develop something new, that wasn't related to a particular contest of sort.
Here i present you the Motivator break action shell toy pistol! It's a fun small toy that uses compatible 20mm toy shells. I've developed two versions and for each two types of barrels, one for airsoft 6mm BBs and one for larger shells (nerf, gel, paintball etc…). This pistol was designed from scratch, taking inspiration from flare launchers and the (in)famous goblin pistol.
The first version uses parts that i had readily available, the second one uses makersupply ready parts which have already been added to the BOM.
This image lists all the parts needed for the standard version:
I WAS ABLE TO TEST ONLY THE FIRST VERSION.
IF YOU ARE PRINTING THE MAKERSUPPLY VERSION PLEASE CONTACT ME SO THAT WE CAN TEST THE TOLERANCES AND IF THE ASSEMBLY WORKS AS INTEDED. THIS MESSAGE WILL BE DELETED ONCE I SUCCESSFULLY VERIFY THAT THE MAKERSUPPLY VERSION IS WORKING WELL.
How to assembly the toy gun:
Print the parts, make sure to support the structures well. If you decide to start from scratchw without using the bambu 3mf files that i have created but just downloading the other 3mf files directly in your custom slicers i can't guarantee the tolerances will work as intended. Please look at how i have manually supported the pieces and positioned them in the bambu files. I used tree supports, brim and the 0.2mm optimal profile.
Clean all the parts using the deburring tool and where needed sand!
Start assembling the body and trigger mechanism. These are the most complex. I suggest you first insert the main trigger pin in the body ⅓ in and insert the trigger (heat the pins a little to enlarge the hole in the body, also use the hammer!), trigger cam and trigger pin all togetherpinching them with two fingers while having the body rotated upside down (having the trigger cut and trigger bottom looking at you) such that by sliding them and supporting them you are able to press the main trigger pin and pierce through the trigger cam, locking the mechanism in place. Take your time and do not rush this part, the pin holes have been made slightly smaller because the pins have to lock in place!
With the heating tool insert the 4 screw heat inserts in their respective places.
For the makersupply (2mm version) cut the 0.5*5*30mm springs to obtain 2x25mm length springs (called button springs) and one 15mm spring (called trigger spring). Then heat the base of the button springs and click them in the body. Do the same with the smaller 0.4*5*15mm barrel lock springs on the top of the body.
Install the barrel lock and barrel with their respective pins.
Place the back button spring guides in the button springs and force a little the trigger spring (do not heat it!) on the trigger spring support of the trigger.
Gently close the assembly with the grip and start tightening the first two top screws. Then you can finish with the two base screws
And that's it! In my case i have tested gas airsoft shells and they work well. At first it could happen that the trigger doesn't return, but it's due to friction. Also a little silicon oil can help. I don't know if PLA it can resist CO2 shells kickback, in that case maybe a stronger material should be used.
I hope you'll have fun! And use the adeguate protections before playing!

Remember that if you change the support type, or change material at all, the tolerances might not work for you.
After printing, because of the model shape and tight tolerances, some small bridging might form anyway, and will have to be sanded or removed with the deburring tool or other tools. Before rating the print profile, if you're having BIG issues, it's probably your printer settings or the printer malfunctioning. Also remember that if you want to contact me because you're having issues, i'm available through the private message function of makerworld and i'll be happy to help you!
