Description

Customisable Plant Cage

Protect your plant pots & flowerbeds with these configurable and quick to print plant cages.

Customise to the size you need, set the cage mesh size to what you need, and add legs for holding the cage securely into the ground.

If you'd prefer a circular version - it is now available here: https://makerworld.com/en/models/1429103-customisable-plant-pot-cage-circular#profileId-1485701

Update 19/05/25: Updated the parametric configurator with two new features.  Option to choose between square or Hexagon grid pattern.  Option to add a square or circle hole on the top surface (for plants to grow through)

Use cases:

  • Protect your plants & bulbs from animals like squirrels and rabbits
  • Use to hold in place fine netting to protect your plants from insects & slugs
  • Protect delicate plants from wind
  • Adding some colour and structure to your flowerbeds
  • Protect houseplants from pets or toddlers
  • Customise as a flat mesh plate to use as strawberry saver
  • Customise without a top surface to make a good “grow tube” climbing support for tall growing plants
  • Use to “Stack” plant pots with flowers in them on top of each other

Instructions:

Click “customise” button under the print profile (you have to use on thew webpage not on the app unfortunately) to open the customizer.  Configure the following parameters to get the plant cage you require:

  • Cage dimensions - height, length, width & thickness of the cage wall
  • Leg dimensions - how many sharp legs around the edge of the cage for holding the cage into the soil; and vary how long they are
  • Cage Mesh Dimensions - to vary how “dense” the cage is.  Make the cage holes smaller or larger, more or less spaced out, square or hexagon, and vary the pattern angle for different appearances.
  • Chamfer settings: Add a  chamfer to make it look a bit nicer :)
  • Centre hole settings:  Decide if you'd like a hole in the top (e.g. for plant to grow through) and what diameter

Refer to the notes next to each parameter for additional guidance.

Top tip: If you keep grid pattern angle at 45 degrees you should be able to print without support

Once you've got the settings you like hit generate to visualise it, and then click “download” to download the file ready for slicing and printing in bambu studio.

Should print easily if you let bambu studio auto-orient. If the cage is bigger than your build plate - you can cut it in half and use connectors to join it together.  See one of my print profiles for an example.

See my print profiles for good print settings, my suggestions for optimising print time while having good overhangs:

-0.28mm draft layer height

-up walls to 3, 0%infill

-adaptive layers - 0.25 quality/speed, smooth 5mm radius

-support (not needed if you're happy with bridging on the bottom rim) - tree slim, support critical regions only

Feel free to save the models you generate as print profiles to show others :)

Top Tip: if using outside you'll want to use filament that is resistant to UV (sunlight) - PETG is much better for this than PLA. ASA is best.

Notes

I've added two print profiles for the two cages you can see pictured to provide printing examples - one small dense cage and one larger one that I've cut in half for fitting in my P1P build plate.

Hope you like the model and find it useful - it has been useful for me in finally keeping squirrels from digging up my bulbs!
