Airlift pump for garden pond

I’m excited to share my latest project: an airlift water pump that I designed to replace the regular pump in my garden pond, which feeds a small creek. The old pump kept getting clogged with debris, making it a real hassle to maintain.

 

The airlift pump is a great alternative because it’s much less sensitive to debris. Basically, it works by using air bubbles to lift water. When you pump air into the system, the bubbles rise and carry the water up with them. This means less chance of clogging and more reliable performance.

 

In my design, the 3D print connects to the end of the tubing through which the water flows (using a large connector) and to a regular aquarium air pump (with a small connector). Just a tip: make sure not to use tubing that’s too tight, as the connectors could snap off.

When installing the pump, hang it above the bottom of the pond, at least 20 cm below the surface. And of course, be careful with electricity and water!

 

I’m really happy with how this airlift pump turned out, and I hope it inspires others to find creative solutions for their own water features!
