DIY Star Tracker - Simple, effective, cheap

Hi folks,

today I would like to introduce you to my project: the Star Tracker,

a simple yet powerful camera tracker for astrophotography.

The special feature: The construction is simple and can be realized without

special electronic or programming knowledge. It is therefore ideal for anyone

who likes to create and photograph without having to dig deep into

microcontroller coding or complicated electronics.

Highlights:

  • Compatible with the standard 1/4" camera thread and ARCA-Swiss (standard Swiss plate)
  • Works with a standard power bank (5V) - perfect for mobile use
  • Components are freely available (e.g. Nema 17 stepper motor with planetary gear, stepper motor controller, converter, USB-C adapter)
  • No programming required - the controller parameters are preconfigured and easy to set
  • Only a few tools required: soldering iron, screwdriver, a multimeter is recommended

I have successfully tested the tracker with a Canon EOS 1200D - exposure times of up to 3 minutes without star trails are possible

(with good alignment). The construction is modular, stable and lightweight.

Further information and hardware used
- CANON EOS 1200D (weight approx. 500g)
- Tripod Rollei Compact Traveler No.1
- ATUMTEK 360° 1/4" ball head
- Powerbank 26800mAh
- Intervalometer
- Additional ball head required for connection between adapter and camera (standard 1/4" ball head should fit)
- Compatible with ARCA Swiss Plate
- USB-C connected (standard power bank)
- Intervalometer helpful for shooting
- tested for 18mm F4.0 ISO 400 exposure time 180"

If you have any questions or something does not work, please contact me.

Feedback is welcome - I look forward to suggestions or ideas for further development!

Clear nights and clear pictures to you all
