Stitching Pony for leatherwork
I wanted a stitching pony for my newfound interest in leatherwork, and I did find a few models, but I still thought there was room for improvement, and wanted to try out and improve my design skills in Fusion360, so I went and made a new one from scratch.
Features
- Folds up for compact storage
- Print-in-place hinge for the main clamp
- Optional embedded magnets for needle minding
- Can use metal hardware or printed nuts and bolts (I used metal since the clamping force required can be quite high)
- Sleek and modern design with few components
I printed it in PLA and have tested it for several leather projects without issue, but if you're concerned about strength, PETG (or ABS I suppose) can be used instead. (The filament I used is PrimaSelect Metal Shine - Coffee Gold)
!!Notes!!
- It does require some supports for the clamp to print in place – this has been placed in the necessary spots in the print profile!!
- There is a pause around the middle to insert 2x nuts into the main clamp – for easiest removal, remove the supports inside the holes BEFORE you put the nuts in place and continue the print (I forgot for one of them, and it can be removed afterwards, but it's way easier to do it before)
- The nut in the table clamp is placed after the print is done and can be glued in place if necessary.
- I split some of the smaller parts in half to print them sideways for increased durability, but the second plate contains the whole ones if you prefer. There are also some washers for the lower bolt in case your screw is too long.
Parts + Assembly
The assembly is pretty straight forward and there are only a few parts required.
Parts:
- 3x M5 hex nuts
- 2x M5 40mm hex bolts
- 1x M5 20mm hex bolt (can be 40mm, then use the washers for grip)
- 1x Spring (about 8-10mm wide and 20mm long)
- 1-4x 6*2mm magnets
Assembly:
- Add the 2 nuts in during printing + remove supports in holes
- Remove supports
- Gently start twisting the clamp and remove the supports between the pieces
- Place the 3rd nut in the hole of the table clamp
- Insert the bolts into the knobs (glue in place if desired)
- (Optional) insert magnets into the clamp and one of the “star-shaped” bolt covers
- Insert bolt covers and glue in place
- Hold the spring between the two parts of the clamp and insert one of the bolts with a “star-shaped” handle - screw it into the nut
- Put the table clamp next to the lower part of the clamp and insert the second “star-shaped” bolt through both pieces
- Insert the bolt with the oval handle into the table clamp from the outside
- Glue the halves of the “swivel” pieces together
- Add the “swivel” pieces to the top of the bolt
Final comments
- There are a few non-manifold edges that bambu studio shows a warning for, but the model prints just fine anyway, so it's possible to just ignore the warning (check the model after slicing to ensure everything looks okay before printing).
- I printed my pony with a 0.6 nozzle, but it can of course be printed with a 0.4.
- Can be printed on the A1mini!!
- STEP-file included for remixing (but note that it's not the most clean file 😅)
