Description
Step into the prehistoric world of dinosaurs with my self-designed Dino Balance Game – an exciting skill-based challenge for all ages. This game was fully created in Fusion 360 and is optimized for multi-color 3D printing with standard desktop printers. A clever design, fine-tuned tolerances, and customizable components make this a true highlight in any maker’s collection.
At the center of the game is a large, hollow dino egg that serves as the balancing base. It rests on a green platform meant to represent grass, offering a stable base layer. The egg’s slightly unstable, rounded shape increases the challenge of keeping the game board steady – perfect for engaging gameplay.
Hidden beneath the grass base is a fine thread that grants access to the hollow interior of the egg. This threading is precisely modeled to fit the included screw-on cap. If your printer tends to have minor tolerance variations, the cap can be scaled down by -1%, but this is usually not necessary as the part is already designed with a subtle tolerance.
The interior can be filled with sand, metal balls, or other weighty materials to increase overall stability. The weight affects how much the board on top wobbles, allowing you to tailor the game’s difficulty to your liking.
On the top of the egg, you'll find a rectangular cutout (a “negative rectangle”) designed to hold a detachable tip. This conical tip connects the egg to the wobbly game board. It's not glued in place – and that's on purpose. Over time, friction can wear the tip down, so it’s designed to be easily replaceable.
Thanks to the modular approach, you can swap the tip not only with a new 3D printed version, but also with other materials using a custom adapter – such as toothpicks, wooden sticks, or even metal rods. This allows you to control the board’s tilt behavior and adapt the game’s movement range.
The balancing plate on top is a flat, structured disc featuring a repeating hexagon pattern. This design not only looks great but also serves a functional purpose: each hex tile offers a space to place a dinosaur figure.
On the underside of the plate, there’s another rectangular cutout that matches the inserted tip’s shape. This connection lets the plate pivot and tilt on top of the egg. For easier setup, we recommend gluing the connector piece to the plate – this way, you can easily attach and remove the plate without it falling apart.
The model includes about 60 dino figures, split into three different types (20 of each). These dinosaurs differ in footprint size and weight distribution, making some easier and others harder to place – a built-in difficulty system that keeps the game fun and dynamic.
You can print the dinos monochrome or multicolor. They look especially good in multicolor PLA or gradient filament. Their compact size ensures that they can be printed even on small printers (e.g., Bambu P1S, Prusa Mini).
The goal of the game is to place all dinos one by one onto the wobbling hexagon plate without it tipping over or any figures falling off. Each player may place only one dino per turn. The player who successfully places the most dinos wins.
Gameplay Variants:
The tip may wear out over time due to usage. Replacement tips and adapters are included in the model files.
The green stand can also be decorated with stickers, paint, or markers to make it truly unique.
The game fits perfectly in every room and gaming session.
Print each dino in a different color for a vibrant look!
