Description

This is a wearable print-in-place herringbone planetary gear - but the planet gears have only 2 teeth! It's quite mesmerizing to see them moving in perfect unison.

This kind of rings (see the collection) is quite nice when your fingers need something to fiddle with. they are also quite compact and can even be on your finger while doing something (I have one on my finger while writing this and fumble with it while thinking about the next words). I got feedback from people with ADHD who love these as stim toys.

The rings are separated into 5 parts:

  1. the sun gear (inner ring)
  2. the main parts of the planet gears
  3. the lower 0.38mm (two layers) of the planet gears
  4. the upper 0.38mm (two layers) of the planet gears
  5. the outer ring gear

Coloring only parts 3 and 4 differently requires only 4 color changes in total and thus saves a lot of time and filament waste.

This model requires good bed adhesion and a well dialed-in printer and filament combination; depending on these and the settings, the gears may

  • rotate freely and quite smoothly right from the plate,
  • need some force to break free,
  • need some minutes of breaking in to run smoothly,
  • be totally fused together.

If you have problems with fused gears:

  • use force; if it breaks it wasn't usable anyway.
  • try a different filament; some (like silk) are more prone to ooze and fuse than others.
  • try reducing the extrusion multiplier/flow ratio a bit.
  • try a bit of  XY size compensation (e.g. -0.02 for contour, +0.02 for holes.
  • try printing outer walls first.
  • try reducing acceleration and speed.
  • try reducing the temperature.
