Description
This is a scale model of the South Korean KGGB (Korean GPS-Guided Bomb) fitted to a Mk-82 500 lb general-purpose bomb. The KGGB is a 'bolt-on' guidance and wing kit that converts conventional free-fall bombs into long-range, precision-guided munitions with fire-and-forget capabilities.
This multi-part model is designed for easy printing and assembly, including the guidance module, deployable wings, and tail fins. It is an excellent addition for military aviation enthusiasts, scale modelers, and collectors of modern ordnance.
The KGGB (Korean GPS-Guided Bomb / 한국형 GPS 유도폭탄) is a precision-guided munition developed by South Korea's Agency for Defense Development (ADD) and manufactured by LIG Nex1. The program's goal was to provide the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) with a cost-effective, indigenous stand-off weapon by creating a guidance kit for its existing inventory of general-purpose bombs.
The KGGB's sophistication lies in its GPS/INS guidance kit, which includes an anti-jamming module to ensure high accuracy even in GPS-denied environments. The weapon is capable of executing complex maneuvers, such as turning to attack a target hidden behind a mountain.
The guidance system offers significant tactical flexibility with two distinct flight modes: a 'Circular' mode for orbiting a target to approach from a specific direction, and a 'Waypoint' mode to follow a pre-set path around threats. Pilots can also precisely set the bomb's final descent angle (from 20 to 75 degrees) to effectively engage targets in complex terrain. The system is a standalone "fire-and-forget" weapon that can be mounted and controlled via a Pilot Display Unit (PDU) without needing major modifications to the aircraft, including the F-4, F-5, F-15K, F-16, FA-50, and the future KF-21.
Development has continued with the KGGB 2, a future variant designed to engage moving targets using a new seeker and data link. This version is also expected to be fitted to 1,000 lb bombs. Future plans include multi-purpose warheads and a new KGGB Interface Unit (KIU) for the KF-21 and FA-50, allowing a single aircraft to control up to four of the munitions.
The KGGB has seen combat service outside of the Korean peninsula. In July 2025, the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) reportedly used KGGB-equipped Mk-82 bombs in a border conflict with Cambodia. This marked the weapon's first known operational use.
The primary user of the KGGB is the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF). It has also been successfully exported to the Royal Saudi Air Force and the Royal Thai Air Force. Several other nations, including Colombia and Poland, have expressed significant interest in acquiring the system.
