Project Description
This project is a fully 3D-printed bed frame system designed with modular components that can be scaled to fit any mattress size—from twin all the way up to king. The idea was to create a strong, modern, and functional frame that can be printed in parts and assembled with common fasteners.
The design is based on repeatable modules, meaning you can add or remove sections to perfectly fit your space and mattress dimensions. Each joint, clip, and connector has been engineered to be durable while remaining easy to print on consumer-grade 3D printers.
Hardware & Materials Needed
In addition to the 3D-printed parts, you’ll need:

3) Materials (choose one path)
Budget Build (2x Stock)
• (4) 2×4×8', (4) 2×2×8', (1) sheet 3/4" radiata pine plywood (headboard & slats)
Premium Build (Hardwood)• Red oak hardwood milled to 1.5"×3.5" (rails) + 1.5"×1.5"
• (1) sheet 3/4" oak plywood
Hardware
• Bolts for rail-to-leg: 3/8"-16 hex bolts × 9 (length 2–2½" typical)
• Flat washers × 9, Nylock nuts × 9 (if using through-bolts)
• Heat-set threaded inserts sized to your bolts (recommend: 3/8"-16 or adapt to 1/4"-20/
M6 with matching bolts)
• Wood screws for slats/cleats (1¼"–2")
Finishes (featured) use link for discount: https://www.youtube.com/jonnybuilds
• TotalBoat CA Glue + Activator
• TotalBoat Wood Honey (matte, food safe feel)
4) Tools (featured + typical)
• Rockler workbench w/ dog holes & vices; holdfasts/clamping
• Drill/driver, bits (including heat-insert tip or soldering iron)
• Table saw or circular saw + guide
• Orbital sander (120/150/180/220)
• 3D printer (Bambu Lab H2D recommended), plus laser/vinyl modules for nightstand
liners (optional)
5) Print Files & Settings (legs, brackets, nightstand clips,
drill templates)
STL Pack includes:
• Legs (corner), Center leg (King)
• Headboard brackets
• Drill templates (rail bolt layout)• Nightstand clip set + cork liner DXF
• Flip-out light (optional/advanced)
Suggested CF-PLA Settings (strength/finish)
• Nozzle: 0.4–0.6 mm (0.6 boosts wall strength)
• Layer height: 0.2–0.28 mm
• Perimeters/walls: 5–6
• Top/bottom: 6–8
• Infill: 15% (gyroid/cubic)
• Orientation: Legs printed to maximize load along Z; consider split/keys if printer volume
limited
• Heat-set inserts: preheat tool, seat flush; test pull-out on scrap
6) Step-by-Step Build
A) Prep & Milling
1. Breakdown lumber to cut list (by size).
2. Edge-ease rail and headboard panel (roundover/chamfer optional).
3. Dry fit mattress footprint with rails on floor; confirm lengths.
B) 3D Printed Hardware
4. Print parts (legs, brackets, clips) per settings above.
5. Install heat-set inserts into legs & brackets (follow included insert map).
6. (Optional) Laser-cut cork liners for nightstand clips; vinyl-cut tray liners.
C) Rail Bolt Layout
7. Use included drill templates to mark/center-punch bolt holes on rails. (Outer holes for
end rails, inner holes for side rails.)
8. Drill rails to bolt size; keep perpendicular.9. Test fit: Bolt rails to legs; confirm square diagonals (≤1/8" difference).
D) Center Support (King; optional Queen/Twin)
10. Add center rail (mattress length).
11. Print/install center leg to midspan; fasten as designed.
E) Slats / Cleats
12. Cut slats to width & length.
13. Option 1: Screw slats directly to rail cleats; Option 2: Loose slats on glued cleats.
14. Spacing: 2–3" gaps; add more slats if no box spring.
F) Headboard
15. Cut panel to width & height for size (King 96", Queen 80", Twin 58").
16. Bolt headboard brackets to rails/legs per template.
17. Attach headboard panel to brackets.
G) Modular Nightstands (Same for all sizes)
18. Cut tops: 0.75" × 10" × 16" (oak or matching species).
19. Print clips; add cork liners inside jaws for grip.
20. Dry fit on side rails; add printed catchall trays (vinyl-lined) if desired.
H) Finish & Final Assembly
21. Sand to 220.
22. Wipe clean; apply TotalBoat Wood Honey (per label).
23. Final bolt-up; check rack/square; mattress on; done.
7) Size-by-Size Shopping Lists (fast grab)
King (budget path)
• (6) 2×4×8' (extra for center rail/slat cleats & offcuts)• (1) sheet 3/4" radiata ply (headboard & slats)
• Hardware set (see above), inserts, CA+activator, finish
Queen (budget path)
• (4) 2×4×8'
• (1) sheet 3/4" radiata ply
• Hardware, inserts, CA+activator, finish
Twin (budget path)
• (3) 2×4×8'
• (1) sheet 3/4" radiata ply
• Hardware, inserts, CA+activator, finish
Adjust counts upward for waste, grain selection, or if adding thicker slats/extra cleats.
8) Drill Template Notes
• Templates align to inside faces of rails; mark and drill square.
• Standard layout uses two bolts per rail end into each leg (King adds center leg bolts).
• If using through-bolts, capture washers/nuts inside printed pockets; otherwise use heat-
sets + machine bolts.
9) Safety & Load
• CF-PLA legs tested under ~2,000 lbs compressive load in my video. Real-world results
depend on print quality, orientation, wall/infill, and hardware install.
• Recheck bolts after first week of use; retighten as needed.
10) Optional Flip-Out Light (Advanced)
• Mechanism: print-in-place swing + tilt with spring-loaded friction; auto switch in/out.
• Requires cord routing & solder splice unless using alt puck.• Files provided “as-is” for community iteration—remix encouraged.
Builder Tips
• If your printer volume is limited, split legs with printed alignment keys and bolt sleeves.
• Prefer 0.6 mm nozzle for beefier walls on structural parts.
• In hardwood mode, pre-drill and chamfer to avoid end-grain splits at bolt points.
What You Can Do With It
