Description
The Cathedral of Notre-Dame was begun in 1163, during the reign of Louis VII, and completed only in the 14th century. It is one of the absolute masterpieces of Gothic architecture, a symbol not only of Paris but of all of France. Over the centuries, it has witnessed coronations, revolutions, and restorations, becoming a cultural and spiritual landmark.
Made even more famous by Victor Hugo’s novel Notre-Dame de Paris (1831), the cathedral became the focus of a renewed romantic interest that led to major restoration works in the 19th century. Unfortunately, in 2019, a devastating fire destroyed the spire and part of the roof, but France has launched a major reconstruction project to restore its splendor.
