Description

Since getting my A1 Mini, I received a free Boat Kit 010 with it. Honestly, it just collected dust on the shelf for a while because there weren’t many models for the kit available on MakersWorld. Eventually, I decided to take matters into my own hands and build something unique.

This project was sidelined for some time, but the Battleship Contest finally gave me the incentive to finish it. The result is a tribute to the iconic Soviet Dreadnought from Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2.

The base design was remodeled from a Red Alert 3 mod (with permission) – specifically the C&C Condition Red project on ModDB: Soviet Dreadnought. From there I adapted, rescaled, and reworked the model into a functional kit build for the BambuLab Boat Kit.

Assembly guide video below or at this link

I originally planned to make the rocket ramps articulate, but this turned out to be a structural and printing challenge in a short time (might include it in a version 2.0). Instead, I went for a static low poly model reflecting the sprites from the game – and I’m very happy with how it turned out.

This build is compatible with the BambuLab Boat Kit 010 wind-up motor, and can be printed on any BambuLab printer, including the A1 Mini. All parts will print (and are tested) on the standard PEI plate, though for best results I recommend a SuperTack Cool Plate or an aftermarket Cool Plate (except when printing PLA Silk).

Last but not least: the Dreadnought not only looks the part, it actually floats and can be wound up to sail with the Boat Kit motor. I also included a printable display stand so the model can be proudly shown off when it’s manifesting its twin V3 rockets’ red glare for liberating the USA from its Allied capitalist overlords.

Assembly Guide

1. Hull Assembly

  • Connect the front and back hull pieces using the dovetail connector.
  • Apply firm pressure to ensure a tight fit.

2. Engine Construction

  • Take the left and right engine parts.
  • Glue the piping and plates onto each engine.
  • Slide the right engine in from the back at a 20° angle until it aligns.
  • Repeat for the left engine, also at a 20° angle.
  • Test-fit the engines and bridge to check alignment. When satisfied, remove them, apply glue, and reassemble.

3. Bridge Assembly

  • Position the bridge on top of the hull and click it into place.
  • Ensure the engine fittings press against the front compartment of the bridge.
  • Once aligned, glue the bridge and engines securely.

4. Rockets & Exhausts

  • Take the rocket exhaust and warhead, align and click them together.
  • Apply glue to the slits on the exhaust and attach the fins tightly.
  • Repeat the same steps for the second rocket.
  • Firmly press each rocket’s bottom holes onto the launch platform pegs.

5. Radar & Masts

  • Glue the radar into its socket on the bridge.
  • Attach the lower back mast, then the upper back/bridge mast, applying glue each time.

6. Deck & Details

  • Take the deck parts, glue their inner sides, and slide them from the top onto the bridge until they fit.
  • Carefully apply the Soviet decals to the port and starboard sides of the hull.

7. Display Stand & Optional Weights

  • Connect the display stand legs with the connector, making sure the larger front hole leg and smaller back hole leg are aligned correctly.
  • (Optional) Attach the upper butt weight/duck tail to the bottom, ensuring it still fits the stand, and glue it.
  • Slide on the lower boat weight if desired.

8. Boat Kit 010 Integration

  • Insert the BambuLab Boat Kit 010 wind-up motor into its socket at the stern of the hull.

9. Maiden Launch

  • Place the completed dreadnought gently in water.
  • Confirm that it floats and that the wind-up motor engages.
  • “Mission accomplished, Commander.”
