Description
Its finally here, and its fully customizable. This is The Commander Case, which is “v3” of my commander deck box. This version improves on the previous in every way and adds lots of additional (optional) features. Redesigned from the ground up to take advantage of the MakerWorld customizer to let you build just the deck box you want. Want to add magnets? Want to adjust the fit of the lid? Want to add lots of space for your triple sleeved decks? Want to add a grip or print the name of your deck to the box? Go for it!
And finally.. Custom lid arts are here! And in addition to multi-colored 3D printed versions, it is also super easy to make a custom cork or wood engraved insert for your lid! Customize your Commander Case further with a design on your lid reflecting your commander or the theme of your deck. Applying the design to your custom lid is quick and simple (~1 minute once you know how to do it), and I’ve made a tutorial video walking you through it that is included in the post for each custom lid. I’m also happy to announce that I’ve released a remixable version of the lid so that anyone can make and share their custom lid designs! I’ll be posting a tutorial demonstrating how to set up your print profile to make it easiest for users to apply your art to their custom lids and also how to make your own lid designs starting from an image for those of us that are less artistic! All of the custom designs I've posted as well as any that others have posted as remixes can be found in this collection.
In addition to customizing the lids, I've added versions in the customizer that have slots for “vanity plates” where you can apply custom designs to the back and sides of your case as well. Check that out, and please share about your outcome and experience with that in the comments!
This new version also adds a new feature that I'm calling The Sleeve Snap (shown below) that has its own model page but is also included in the print profiles here. Put your commander in a card sleeve, then snap The Sleeve Snap around it to give it additional protection and have it stand out more from the rest of your cards. This gives you more personalization options in addition to making the box more compact! In the model pictures, you can see that Cloud and Tifa are both in Sleeve Snaps. And for double sided commanders, there is an open back version! Don't worry, though! If you still prefer the top loaders, there will always be versions for those too! You can see the top loader version for the Arahbo or Pantlaza Commander Case pictures (which also show off the optional grips and configurable text on the lid).
The viewing window for the commander cards has been drastically improved, the lid and slide mechanisms have been strengthened, and now there are slots for optional magnets as well. I want to stress - magnets are not necessary for this to function well. Depending on the material and environmental conditions your box encounters, though, your fit may loosen over time. You may find later on that you want to add magnets to ensure you always have a secure fit. Maybe you just prefer the premium feel of the added magnets. I'd recommend printing your box with the slots open for the magnets in case you want to add them later. This does not give a worse fit on the lid from any of my testing (I have printed 20+ of these). There is an option in the MakerWorld customizer to “disable” the spots for the magnets, though, and just have the clean slide. Up to you!
If you do want to add magnets to yours, this was designed for these 1/4 x 1/8 x 1/16 Inch Neodymium Rare Earth Block Magnets N48 from “totalElement.” They currently sell for $15.49 for a pack of 150 with the price going down steadily if you buy additional packs. They also offer free shipping in the USA. I have bought and used magnets from totalElement for a few different personal and professional projects, and they have been great. They win on price, ship quickly, and have always been high quality. I am in the USA and get free and fast shipping. I'm not sure what its like shipping outside the USA, so if anyone finds better suppliers for inside or outside the USA, please share below in the comments and I will add notes of those here!
Nov 20 magnet update: Users outside of the USA have reported issues sourcing these magnets. I've finished making this compatible with Bambu's 10x5x2mm rectangular magnets that I've linked in the “Bill of materials” on this post. These are pictured below! Using these magnets, you only need to use 8 per case instead of 12 with the smaller. If you purchase them using my link on the “BOM” on this post, I think I get a little kick back from them :). Using these magnets from Bambu, the following settings will need to be configured in the customizer:
| Magnet Depth | Magnet Height | Magnet Length | Magnet Spacing | Slide Face Height | Magnet Back Wall Distance |
| 2.15 mm | 5.2 mm | 10.2 mm | *45.2 mm | 6.1999 mm | 6 mm |
*modify this magnet spacing as the length of your box changes. This was configured for the standard size base sleeve snap version.
-Bambu's larger metric magnets installed and working great!
In addition to this new version, I have also made two special versions of The Commander Case: one for partner commanders and another for adding an additional (parametric) storage compartment to store dice, tokens, counters, whatever you can think of.
These customizer files and print profiles also include custom tools (pictured below) that are super helpful for installing the magnets. Trust me, you will want to use these tools, because it is so easy to get these little magnets backwards, glued in, and then realize you messed one up. There's no good way to get them out after gluing them in. Make sure you put all of the magnets into the tool in the same orientation. Then, it is very hard to mess up an installation. The two sides of the tool mate with a different face of the slide, so you can place the magnets onto the corresponding side on tool, place a dab of glue on them, and press them into place. Then repeat with the opposite face of the tool for the corresponding slide component. I've included a video demonstrating the assembly and use of the tools and case below. The customizer files will generate custom tools factoring in your slide face height, magnet dimensions, magnet spacing, and box depth.
There are special settings used in these print profile that you should take into account when using the customizer and building a print profile from scratch. It would be best if you imported those models into one of the posted print profiles for printing, and would give me the credit for MakerWorld points as well :). But for real, if you use the customizer, even if you don't use my print profile, make sure you have these settings!
Notable print profile settings:
Boost MeA lot of time, money, and effort has gone into this project. If you have benefited from this project and have any spare boosts, I would greatly appreciate them!
If you love the design, and are able, feel free to support me with a tip on Ko-Fi! It would be much appreciated as many hours and spools of filament have gone into the design and fine tuning of this version. And I'm still not done! If you are interested in a commercial license, I sell one on my Ko-Fi page for $12/month. All of the terms of the license are on the page where you would subscribe to the membership. Let me know if you have any questions or issues with that!
-this video is outdated and is not the tutorial video i mentioned! That is still to come. I hadn't finalized the names of the components, all of the features, and some other things, so keep that in mind. It is just a deeper dive for any interested.
