According to latter-day saint belief, Moroni was the last prophet of an ancient American civilization around 400 AD. He recorded his peoples history on metal plates and buried them in a hill to preserve their message for future generations. These records eventually become known as the Book of Mormon. (Mormon being another figure from ancient history who helped gather and inscribe the records of the people).
