 RadGauge-X — High-Precision Radius Gauge

(3D-Printed + MR74ZZ Bearing + Anti-Play Spring System)

RadGauge-X is an upgraded version of my original RadGauge — a compact radius-measuring tool that converts linear motion into smooth angular displacement.
The new X-model focuses on eliminating assembly tolerance and mechanical play, significantly improving precision and user feel.

🔧 What’s New

✅ MR74ZZ bearing indicator
– Integrates a 4×7×2.5 mm ball bearing inside the pointer
– Provides ultra-smooth, low-friction rotation with near-zero axial play

 

✅ Spring-wing preload structure
– Eliminates side-to-side slack in the slider
– Maintains consistent pressure without needing printed tolerances

 

✅ Reduced measurement error
– Original RadGauge error: ≤ ±0.3 mm
– RadGauge-X error: ≤ ±0.1 mm
 

✅ Print-friendly design
– All parts optimized for FDM
– No supports required
– Fast assembly

 

⚠️ Notes

  • Since gear teeth are 3D-printed, tiny backlash inevitably exists
  • Accuracy improves significantly with good printer calibration

     

🪄 Why This Version Exists

The original RadGauge worked well, but full 3D-printed tolerance sometimes caused small errors depending on print quality.
RadGauge-X removes most of that play using:

  • Spring tensioned rails, and
  • A real ball-bearing pivot

The result is measurably better repeatability and a much more satisfying mechanical feel.

Assemble at 50mm measure setting

After aligning the parts as shown below, place the front cover horizontally in the correct position, cover it with something wide and solid like a ruler, and press firmly to allow easy and accurate assembly without damaging the parts.
