Description

I have enjoyed seeing all the gridfinity variations that people have created but had not come across one that suited some of my needs.

My 3 x 2 Gridfinity Tray holds 6 cups that are actually twist locked onto a tray base.

When I am building some parts say a batch of 5 x Ghostbuster Firehouses I need to go to my hardware section and collect a number of bolts, washers and nuts and instead of putting into one bowl and then later need to sift through them now I can load into my portable gridfinity tray and transport the tray between work stations without risk of a cup falling off the tray.

The difference with my design is each cup is twisted to lock and unlock meaning I can unlock and pour 1 x cup on to my assembly mat without tipping everything else out. The trays are also great for that trip / stumble / clumsy action travelling between workstations and avoid loosing everything on the ground etc.

When printing, print the following to make one gridfinity tray:

1 x tray

6 x cup A (top)

6 x cup B (base)

6 x pins.

If you chose not to use the printed pins you can use threaded bolts :

6 x M3 x 6mm long button screws

The reason for the separate base for the cups is no print supports are needed for this print job and you can achieve a really nice finish.

Assembling the cups

Option 1

  • you can bolt the cup A to cup B with a M3 x 6mm button screw
  • to do this tap the M3 threads in the hole in the base part
  • add 2-3 drops of plastic glue to the inner rim of the base
  • and then install the screw through the base of the cup - let the glue harden and then ready to install into the tray. The glue stops the bolt from undoing when twist locking.

Option 2

  • you can glue / pin - cup A to cup B with the provided printed pins
  • carefully do a dry test fit and you may need to slightly open up the hole in the base of the cup to 2.5mm
  • add 1-2 drops of glue to the hole of the cup A and then press in the pin so the pin head is glued down
  • then add 2-3 drops of plastic glue to the inner rim of the base
  • and then install the cup and pin into the base - you might need a bolt to push the pin down so everything is pressed nice and tight together

Fittings Cups to the Tray

  • Do a test fit of an assembled cup to the tray and twist to lock.
  • If it doesn't fit there is one tiny printed button on each wing - trim this a little to reduce the tension of the cup to the tray. This just allows for a neat fitting cup to the tray and allows for different materials and slight variation in print quality or your printer.
  • Insert the wings of the cups into the clearance slots of the tray and then twist to lock into place, then unlock (twist the opposite way) to be able to remove and pour out.

I do ask if you download something that was helpful for you - please give the model a LIKE or a BOOST - as that gives me motivation to design, create and share more.
