Description

Behold The Windicator!

 

UPDATES: 

  • I've created a more compact and chonky V2.0 of the Windicator,  22.5cm nose to tail compared to V1 which is 31cm nose to tail.
  • I've created a V1.1 print profile for this larger V1 version of the Windicator that has a slightly different tail shape, one that matches V2. Identical performance between V1.0 and V1.1. Just decide which tail shape you prefer :)

Fun little weathervane/anemometer optimised for A1 mini on a single plate with a 4 hour-ish print

 

Everything is push fit, you'll just need two 608zz bearings. 

 

I've printed in PLA and PETG. The tolerances are very tight so while it all fits together easily, with PETG I had to sand the cup arms very slightly. I'm favouring PETG because I don't want it to sag in the summer. I used ELEGOO rapid PETG with the Bambu labs PETG basic profile with the nozzle temps at 255 because I get horrible layer adhesion otherwise. 

 

The shaft is designed to fit some copper pipe I had lying around so I'll let you figure out how to mount it yourself. The  shaft itself is the exact height needed to prevent binding in the top section. The thin part of the shaft is 16mm tall and 8.25mm diameter for a snug fit into the bearing. The shoulder tapers out to 13.6 diameter but as long as there's a taper to prevent the shaft touching the moving part of the bearing, this can be as wide as you like.

 

For balance I've used 3x 2 pence pieces (UK). I'm sure other coins or washers would be fine. The disc is to hold the coins in place. It fits very snugly for me. 

 

The little plastic washer provides a little gap between the two bearings so that they're free to rotate against eash other.  If it's too snug, just get it started then when you marry the top section (cups) to the bottom (vane) it will push into place. 

 

Anyway. I love it. It goes like the clappers in my garden.
