Description

This customizable collapsible saber is the second (2nd) set in a collection of many different designs that I wanted to create.

I am just getting into the 3D design space and trying new things with my 3D printer, and these collapsible sabers have been the result of my tinkering.

The sections screw together and meant to be interchangeable with all the parts in this collection. Here is a link to the whole collection: https://makerworld.com/en/@bill.m.davis/collections/713533

I have found that the “decoration” can be fragile on the handle and I have been using glue for them, otherwise they can break off.  The “decoration” can also be added to the top of the handle to add more customization options.

(10/12/2024) New Light Module Update

The new light module for this saber has been completed!  It has been designed to work with the same lights as other modules.

Non-affiliated links:

  • US: (3.5 inch - short pen lights) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B097MKQ8MG
  • US: (5.2 inch - long pen lights) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09H2MNB65
  • UK: (3.5 inch - short pen lights) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07LC6YPTC
  • FR: (3.5 inch - short pen lights) https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B0BX3T43VC

The new “holders” (A and B) hold the pen light in place, and the holder with the flashlight in it slides into the back of the light module and cap makes sure the flashlight/holder combination don't fall out.  The button to turn the flashlight on/off is accessed through a hole in the cap.

Version 2 also includes an extended cap so you can cover those longer (5.2") pen lights.

The new version also includes an option for a connector cap to combine two sabers end-to-end (instead of the light module).  An example is pictured to the left, demonstrating this feature used with two of the other models.  The connector peg screws into the bottom of both connector caps, thus connecting any two sabers.

Note from the designer:  I personally do not like connecting two sabers.  I think it makes them too long and prone to breaking something.  I have added them at the request of the many.  So if you want a double saber, enjoy!

(1/22/2025)  Updated to Version 2.2 - Locking Head

In this iteration of the locking head there have been some improvements over the first (saber #7).

These improvements include:

  • Stronger Locking Mechanism:  Increased strength for the locking mechanism by making them wider and rounded at the base.  Can still operate even if one arm breaks.
  • Optional Shroud:  The shroud is designed to help protect the head and ensures that the locking teeth do not over-rotate and block the blade from fully extending.

The new locking head has three “teeth” that lock in place and prevent the blade from extending when “locked”.  Rotate the locking mechanism to right to lock, and to the left to unlock.

The shroud was originally designed to be printed in TPU to protect the saber from impact damage, but it works in other materials also, it just provides less protection.  The shroud simply twists on to the threads on the outside of the head.

Locking Head Assembly:

To insert the lock mechanism into the head, carefully insert the tips of the arms into the holes at the base of the head.  Slowly work them into the head, trying to keep even pressure on all the arms.  Even if one arm breaks, the lock should still function; it just won't hold that tooth closed.

Boost MeBoosts let me know if my effort is worth it. It takes a lot of time to come up with and test all these designs and improvements. Let me know which ones you really love.

Profile Photo

Taken on an iPhone 13.  White poster board was used as a background.  Setting on the glass top of my Glowforge (laser) printer, for reflection.  Used Windows Photo Editor to increase the brightness and crop the photo.  The blade in this photo was created using the transparent PETG and a green LED version of the pen light in the light module.
