Viking Bust Chess Set – Print Test & Notes

This time I present a set of Viking-inspired chess pieces designed as detailed busts.
Each piece represents a powerful Norse character – warriors, shieldmaidens, elders and mythical beasts – sculpted with a strong, monumental presence.

The focus of this set is solid form, readable silhouettes and sculptural depth, inspired by Nordic mythology and ancient warrior culture. These pieces feel more like small statues than traditional chessmen.

Printing Recommendations

These models were tested both in resin and FDM, with excellent results.

• Resin printing is highly recommended if you want to capture every facial detail, armor texture and ornament.
• FDM printing also works very well thanks to the thick forms and clean geometry.

Even with FDM, the pieces retain a premium, collectible look.

Suggested Print Setup (6–10 cm busts)

FDM:

• Nozzle: 0.4 mm
• Layer Height: 0.08–0.1 mm
• Infill: 50% or more (adds a satisfying weight)
• Wall Loops: 2–3
• Supports: Tree supports (auto)
• Material:
  • PLA Matte (Stone / Bronze / Sand tones work best)
  • Optional metallic or dry-brush finish

Resin:

• Standard grey or beige resin
• Medium supports
• Slightly heavier base exposure for stability

Finish & Feel

A higher infill is strongly recommended – it gives the pieces a solid, stone-like weight, which greatly improves the premium feel during play.

The bases are thick and stable, making the set perfect both for display and functional chess games.
