IKEA MALM Furniture Plastic Feet

Hi! 

Unfortunately, newer IKEA furniture isn’t built the way it used to be.
The current (2025) MALM series has a significant design flaw:

• The bottom support rail is not flush with the side panels (2 mm difference)
• The original plastic feet therefore lift the entire cabinet
• Most of the weight ends up resting only on the cover rail, which is far from ideal

To fix this, I designed a set of custom replacement plastic feet.

 

On the tray, the models are arranged (left to right) as follows:
 4×1 mm spacers, 3 mm, 5 mm, 7 mm, 9 mm.

Solution Overview

The original IKEA feet are 5 mm high.

Recommended setup

• 3 mm feet under the bottom rail (recommended default)
• This keeps the cabinet level and distributes the weight properly

Optional tilted setup

If you prefer the cabinet to lean slightly backward:

• Keep 5 mm feet under the rail
• Use 7 mm feet under the side panels

Fine Adjustment & Uneven Floors

• 1 mm spacers are included for fine-tuning
• The tallest foot is 9 mm, which should handle most uneven floors
• If needed, you can:
  • Stack up to two spacers per foot
  • Adjust each corner individually

Strength & Testing

• After two test prints, the feet perform perfectly
• They can handle more load than the original IKEA feet
• Taller versions (7 mm and 9 mm) feature extra reinforcement for added strength

Printing Recommendations

For best results, use a slightly flexible material:

• ✅ PETG (recommended)
  • Easier to remove
  • Less likely to snap
• ⚠️ PLA can be brittle
• ✅ PLA+ should also work well

Final Thoughts

Thanks to these feet, our MALM cabinet now stands perfectly straight —
to my wife’s great satisfaction 🙂
