Description
Adrenaline, also known as epinephrine, is a hormone and neurotransmitter famous for its central role in the body's acute stress or "fight-or-flight" response. Produced by the adrenal glands in response to danger or excitement, it rapidly prepares the body for physical action. An adrenaline rush causes the heart rate to accelerate, blood vessels to constrict to increase blood pressure, and airways to dilate to boost oxygen intake. It also increases blood sugar levels for a quick energy surge and can decrease the body's sensitivity to pain. As a medication, adrenaline is used to treat severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), cardiac arrest, and asthma attacks.
