If you want to achieve the same quality as my version in the video then please read instructions:

HOW TO ACHIEVE THE WOOD GRAIN LOOK ON A 3D PRINT:

Supplies

  • Copic Refill Walnut E59  - Doesnt matter where you buy it. Find a non-shady website and make sure it is the refill version that looks like this

  • Paint Brush
  • Primer spray paint - Red, orange, caramel, or brown

Painting Steps:

  1. Spray the wardrobe top/bottom/door with the primer. Hold the can approximately 40cm back from the part when spraying. Apply coats in even/quick sweeps going back and forth. You want to start spraying 20 cm to the right of the part and finish 20cm to the left of the part to maintain even coat. Repeat until the part is fully primed.
  2. Let the part dry for several hours.
  3. After everything is dry, get your paint brush and your Copic ink. Apply a few drops to a random place on the part and let gravity pull the drip down the walls. After the drip has went down 3 or 4 cm, quickly brush it with your paint brush in an up/down direction. The ink is alcohol based so it dries VERY quickly. If you feel as though that you had messed anything up, no big deal. Just apply another drop in the same spot and do it again. The alcohol gets displaced with every new drop.
  4. Repeat step 3 over all of the areas that do not have the stain. Maintain and constant brushing direction. For long spans, I recommend placing ink half way up from the previous stain that you had brushed on. Swipe up and down and let the newly applied ink displace the previous ink.
  5.  For more information please see the following Youtube video for a tutorial on how to achieve this effect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NBW7uJnJGo

Printing the colored pictures:

How to add colors-by-layer in slider for those who are unfamiliar with the process.

  • There are three colored 3d prints you will need for the assembly. The 3mf file SHOULD have all colored models preloaded with the appropriate color swaps. However, sometimes the colors get messed up when downloading and syncing your printer. Please follow these instructions if that happens. I am using the file “Trees” for this brief example.

    1. Slice the model in black and go to preview mode. You must be in preview mode to do this. See pictures below.

    2. On the right hand side of the page, there is a slider to show the layers. Scroll down with your mouse on the slider to layer 4 and RIGHT CLICK on the circular ball that represents the current layer on slider. Hover your mouse over “Change Filament” and then select the filament that corresponds to the color that you want to change that layer to. See pictures below.

      3. Now scroll up on the side bar to the next color change layer (in this example it is layer 7) and repeat step 2 but select white filament instead.

      4. Do this for the remainder of the colors listed below

      5. Go back to the “Prepare” tab, reslice the file, and then print!

These are the layers at which you need to change colors for the various colored parts. (Instructions above for those who are unfamiliar with the process)

    • Trees
      • Black - Start
      • Green or Blue Gray- Swap at 4
      • White - Swap at layer 7
      • Green or Blue Gray - Swap at layer 13
      • White - Swap at layer 17
    • Snow Floor
      • Black - Start
      • Blue Gray or Green - Swap at layer 4
      • Gray - Swap at layer 6
      • White - Swap at layer 8
    • Background Scene
      • Black - Start
      • Blue Gray - Swap at layer 5
      • Gray - Swap at layer 8
      • White - Swap at layer 10

Assembly:

  • The assembly is very simple. After printing/painting the wardrobe, place the snow floor in the wardrobe on the angled surface. Id recommend using double sided tape on the backside of the snow so it does not shift when assembling the rest of the inside.
  • Next put in the clothes, trees, branches, and background scene in the slots located on the sides of the wardrobe. You may want to glue them in for easier alignment when placing the top portion of the wardrobe on.
  • Put the doors post in the hole on the lower wardrobe. Hold it in place and put the top part of the wardrobe on. Make sure both the upper and lower post on the door go into the holes located on the upper and lower wardrobe.

Lighting/Wiring:

For the lights I used Maker's Supply COB LED Strip Light and attached it to a power supply. There is a hole in the back of the wardrobe for routing wires or LEDs into the wardrobe. This hole will be covered by the background scene so it will not be seen. I applied tape to the COB LED strip light where the lamp post is in the background scene so it can be illuminated. Then I passed the remainder of the COB up and onto the roof of the wardrobes top frame. I used double-sided tape to secure it and to not block any light. You may want to use some adhesive (double sided tape, or glue) to secure the top wardrobe to the bottom. Please see BOM for materials.

The black portion of the wire goes to the potentiometer and the black/red twisted portion goes to the LED. See picture below
