Description

Note - the alien image is AI generated by DallE3.

Was curious how the Bambu glow filaments work and how they looked under UV light so tried out an alien design using UV LED light strips. Turns out it works great! The LEDs excite the filament to glow pretty bright - just as bright as a regular lightbox - but with that odd monocolor glow. Photos don't really do it justice but it's the typical black light like glow.

Added - might want to change the white reflector in the back print to glow filament. The Bambu Basic PLA white seems to be a UV absorber. You can at least turn the UV light green if you use glow filament for the reflector and diffuser. If you use white as the diffuser behind the alien logo you may not even get the green to light up much since the white will block the UV. If you don't use glow for the reflector, that's ok too. It works fine as in the .3mf file.

Construction is the same as other lightboxes I've done with the back and sides all one piece and the design itself just has a mounting ring. There are two layers of additional glow filament behind the design to provide strength and more glow and a two layer white (but could be glow if you wish) “reflector” printed inside the back so no need to glue tin foil or use aluminum tape. A strain relief stanchion that has a slot for a zip tie is included. Holes are pre-cut with plugs that can blank them off using a drop of glue to hold them. The hanging slot has a cover so no light leaks. A base is included. Either some double stick tape or glue will hold the base to the back. The holes are small so if your LEDs already have connectors on them, you may need to feed them in through the base if you use it.

Since the box is fully closed, don’t put more than 4 or 5 watts worth of LEDs (which is plenty) in it. If you like it really bright, keep an eye on temperatures until you know it is ok.

And please rate this once you print. If any issues, please let me know in comments and I can see how I can help. Thanks! 😁
