Description

Ever wanted a pocket-sized boomerang you could take outside? Well, now you have one! In less than half an hour and with 8 grams of filament, you can have your very own quad-blade boomerang. Keep it in a bag or pocket, so that you can enjoy throwing and catching as soon as good weather hits!

Following the unexpected success of my Mini Indoor Boomerang model, I am excited to present the long-awaited ‘sequel’ - one that you can take outside instead of being stuck indoors.

I understand that there are inevitably going to be some doubts that this boomerang actually returns, so to prove it does, here is a GIF of my younger brother successfully throwing and catching one printed from Black PLA Basic:

It doesn't require a hard throw, and has a nice, short hover for the catch, making it a suitable boomerang for beginners and children (although I would recommend starting with a larger boomerang, check out Ghoul).

Before Printing:

If you are left-handed, mirror the model before slicing or you cannot throw it with conventional technique. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Throwing Technique

Throwing technique is fairly simple, so here is a quick guide. If you would like to know if you are throwing with correct technique, I suggest comparing your throwing technique to the GIF from earlier.

(These instructions are for right-handed throwers, so if you are left handed, just mirror whatever I say)

Grip

Make a fist, and pinch one of the wings in between your index and thumb. Your thumb should be on the side of the airfoils (the curved side). If it's not, you're holding the boomerang upside-down.

Throwing

Throw overarm, like a baseball, and keep the boomerang vertical - do not throw sidearm. This is a common misconception as it makes it look like the boomerang wouldn't fly when you throw it (trust me, it will). Release at head level, and throw straight forward without excessive power. You are not throwing a 100mph fastball with an 8 gram boomerang.

If there is no wind, release with a little bit of layover (about 5 or 10 degrees clockwise from vertical).

Flicking the Wrist

A lot of guides will tell you to flick your wrist right before you release the boomerang. While this works for some people, I prefer to spread the rotation across the whole arm movement, in other words, my wrist rotates while my arm is moving instead of at the very end. In my opinion, this makes it easier to control your throw and makes you less likely to throw the boomerang straight down into the ground which can happen when you flick your wrist right at the end instead.

Wind and Throwing Direction, THE MOST IMPORTANT!!!!!

99% of ‘boo-hoo, I give up, boomerangs don't come back after all 😭😭😭’ moments when trying to throw boomerangs comes from people not understanding the effect of wind direction. The wind direction changes, and you must change your throwing direction accordingly.

A good starting point is to face towards the wind, and then turn to the right about 45 degrees. In the GIF, the wind was blowing in around the same direction as the length of the cricket pitch, which is why my brother turned to the right before throwing.

Keep in mind, this is only gives you a rough idea of which direction to throw. You still need to adjust based on where the boomerang lands if you are unable to catch it, or are still unsatisfied with its accuracy.

Refer to these diagrams to adjust your throwing direction:

Test yourself:

 What direction should my brother

have thrown in the video to avoid moving to catch?

Hint: he had to move left to catch.

Answer: More Clockwise

One last thing, if it's too windy, you're gonna have to try again another day, sorry. That's the main downside with having such a small and light boomerang.

Boost MeI've tried to be more thorough this time to make this boomerang easier to throw and catch. If you like this boomerang, or any of my others, please consider boosting. The filament I receive from Makerworld point redemptions is what fuels my boomerang R&D!
