Version 1 of my under-shelf foil / cling-wrap holder ended up being pretty popular. But I designed it when I was still newer to 3D modeling, and over time I’d occasionally get feedback that the assembly pegs were hard to use—which, honestly, they were.

The model worked, people liked it, and I kept thinking “if it ain’t broke, why fix it?” Still, I knew it wasn’t as good as it could be, and that kept nagging at the back of my mind.

After my fiancée moved in, we realized she couldn’t quite reach the first ones I had placed. So it was time to print a few more and mount them a bit lower. That made it the perfect opportunity to revisit the design and improve it.

So I did.

Version 2 is a ground-up refinement focused on easier printing, easier assembly, and broader compatibility.

What’s new in V2:

  • Holds a single roll instead of three — print as many (or as few) as you need
    • Smaller print volume, now fits on an A1 Mini
  • Uses only about 88g of filament.
  • Prints in about 3 hours on a single plate.
  • 3 perimeters for strength
  • Larger mortise-and-tenon pegs with improved tolerances
    • 1.25° inward taper on the holes so pegs friction fit
  • Includes a <1g fit test on plate 2 so you can check tolerances before printing everything

Like V1, this design is intended to be glued together for permanence and mounted using foam mounting tape. The friction-fit pegs are just secure enough to hold the piece together while the glue sets. I’ve had my original mounted this way for over a year of heavy use with no issues. I’m not a big fan of designs that require drilling into cabinets or walls.

If you’ve printed V1 before, this should feel familiar—but easier to print, easier to assemble, and more forgiving overall.
