Description
I wasn't happy with the off-the-shelf solutions for 10" Mini Rack Power Strips/PDUs being $50-$75. And most of those only had 4 outlets So I set out to find a better solution.
I found this power strip by Addtam on Amazon (https://a.co/d/8xBgwu8) for $20 (have seen it on sale for $15). And I really liked that it had 12 outlets, with 4 on 3 different sides making it easier to connect large power supplies. Also the USB ports were a bonus. I knew it wasn't going to be a perfect bolt up, but I figured I could mount it to a 10" rack blank plate and go from there. Unfortunately that didn't work as the mounting tabs on the power strip interfered with the bolts holding it to the rack. So instead I decided to just remove the factory backplate from the power strip and design my own replacement, converting into a 10" rack mountable unit.
Because the power strip is slightly wider than 1U (measuring in at 48mm) I have provided you with 4 different options for the back plate.
| Centered mounting holes for if you have no other items mounted to the back of your rack. | |
| Extra space at the top. Allowing for items below to be unobstructed. | |
| Extra space at the bottom. Allowing for items above to be unobstructed. | |
| And lastly a version with extra z-height (4mm) allowing for the mounting plate to be 1U and the power strip has some room to overlap neighboring items. |
Start by unscrewing the 6 screws holding the factory back plate on. This will require the use of a #2 triangle bit. But if you're building a custom 10" server rack, I trust you have an iFixit tool kit. :)
Note: This exposes mains voltage wiring. Please keep your wits about you and make sure this isn't plugged in while doing this. Remember, Electroboom did it so you do not have to :)
Next just install the new backplate of your choosing (see above) and you're good to go. |
