Description

I developed this draw latch, aka toggle latch and over-center latch, as a part of a larger project and decided to share it as an independent piece. There are plenty of good design to be found, but I wanted to explore hook over pivots with interior screws, and maybe this will be an inspiration for someone to do something incredible.

This is not a print-in-place and requires assembly. The exterior dimensions are 26mmW x 60mmL x 15mmH. I have tried to see how much force it can hold, but the heaviest thing I had was a 5 gallon jar, approximately 42 lb, which wasn't enough to break it. See the images. The force was enough to stretch it out of position, but the latch never unlocked.
The primary goals were not to use any external hardware like pins or screws as pins, not to use any supports while printing, to have the hooking points as low as possible, and to have as large off-center distance as possible within the low profile for a secure hold.

There are four parts: catch plate, base plate, hook (pivots on the lever), and the lever (pivots on the base plate).
To assemble, lever needs to be inserted into the base plate pivot, and the hook needs to be connected to the lever. If this doesn't look straightforward to you, I have included an image with numbers for the instructions below.
1. Position the lever next to the base plate as shown.
2. Raise the lever vertically above the base plate and rest it with the notch on the pivot pin.

3. Push the lever down to snap it onto the pivot pin. This may take some force. The base plate should be resting flat on a level and secure surface.

4. Turn the lever so it is resting flat with handle notches facing up. Put the hook as shown, with the larger curl (with the V notch) down into the lever opening.
5. Slightly hold the hook down and raise the handle up. The curl should just go through the opening. It may be just a hair tight but doesn't require force. Once though, it should be free to move within the opening. There a bunch of other ways of doing it, it just this seemed easier to explain.
6. Now, slightly raise the lever and pull the hook towards the lever pivot positioning the hook with the opening in the curl right under the pivot pin.
7. Push the lever down and it should just snap into place onto the pin. This should be easy and doesn't require much force.
8. Assembled it looks like this underneath.

The working gap between plates is about 3/16" (4.8mm). It will work from 1/8" (3.2mm) and up to 1/4 (6.4mm). The larger the gap, the heavier the pull force will be when locked. At 1/4" and up, it will be difficult to keep the base plate secured down with screws.
