Pocket Radar for Brick Worlds

A Real, Working Radar in Toy Form

Pocket Radar for Brick Worlds was created to bring real-world technology into the world of imaginative play.
By combining electronics, programming, and brick-based construction systems, this project turns a compact device into a fully functional, interactive mini radar that is both educational and incredibly fun.

This is not just a toy.
It’s a hands-on STEM project, designed to spark curiosity, creativity, and learning while remaining simple, affordable, and accessible.

A Real Radar, in a Pocket-Sized Format

At the core of Pocket Radar for Brick Worlds is an ultrasonic distance sensor, based on the same principles used in real radar systems, automotive parking sensors, and autonomous robots.

The sensor emits high-frequency sound pulses and measures the echo return time to calculate object distance with impressive accuracy.

A microcontroller processes this data and displays it on a full-color screen, creating a realistic radar-style interface featuring:

  • animated scanning arcs
  • real-time object detection
  • distance indicators
  • dynamic and responsive graphics

All of this fits into a compact, brick-compatible enclosure, perfectly suited for brick cities, space bases, science labs, or futuristic environments.

Realistic Experience, Simple Construction

One of the project’s biggest strengths is its perfect balance between realism and simplicity.

Realism

  • Radar-inspired graphical interface
  • Real object detection (hands, figures, obstacles)
  • Instant response and smooth animations
  • Immersive and believable radar behavior

Simplicity

  • Very low-cost electronics (only a few dollars)
  • Components easily sourced from AliExpress
  • No complex soldering required
  • Clean, minimal wiring
  • Simple and well-commented Arduino code

This makes the project ideal for:

  • beginners in electronics
  • first-time Arduino users
  • parents building together with children
  • makers looking for a quick but rewarding build

Easy to Build, Designed for Everyone

The enclosure is 3D printed and carefully designed to:

  • securely hold all electronic components
  • remain compact and durable
  • integrate seamlessly with brick-based building systems

Assembly is straightforward and fully documented:

  • detailed wiring schematics
  • complete bill of materials
  • step-by-step assembly video
  • ready-to-upload firmware using Arduino IDE

In just a short time, a small set of parts becomes a fully working radar, ready to explore the surrounding world.

Smartphone Connectivity: Play Becomes Interactive

Pocket Radar for Brick Worlds can connect to a smartphone, unlocking additional interactive features:

  • live sensor data visualization
  • alternative radar views
  • adjustable settings such as range, scan speed, and sensitivity
  • opportunities to experiment and customize behavior

This connectivity transforms the radar into a smart, interactive device, extending play and learning far beyond the physical model.

Learning Through Play

Children (and adults!) love this project because:

  • it reacts to real-world movement
  • objects instantly appear on the radar display
  • radar technology becomes intuitive and visual
  • learning happens naturally through experimentation

At the same time, the project encourages:

  • logical thinking
  • problem-solving skills
  • scientific curiosity
  • creativity
  • hands-on technological confidence

It’s the kind of build that leads to a proud moment:
“I built this myself — and it really works!”

A Special Note for Parents 👨👩👧👦

Pocket Radar for Brick Worlds was also designed with parents and educators in mind.

Why Parents Appreciate It

  • Encourages STEM learning through play
  • Promotes active, hands-on engagement instead of passive screen time
  • Perfect for parent–child collaboration
  • Helps children understand real-world sensing technology
  • Builds confidence by creating something functional from scratch

Safe and Thoughtful Design

  • Low-voltage electronics
  • Simple, robust components
  • No dangerous parts or advanced tools required
  • Clear instructions and guided assembly

This makes it ideal for:

  • home learning
  • weekend family projects
  • school science activities
  • makerspaces and STEM clubs
