– Replacement Screen Bezel for 6th Gen X1 Carbon Thinkpads! –

I'm mainly a Mac user, so I got this older X1 Carbon as a backup for when I need to run Windows software. While it's cosmetically in good shape overall the front bezel's soft-touch rubber coating was totally melting away, sticking to hair and just overall looking super gross. Decided to peel off the old stuff and make a new one! It's not as good as the factory option but it's totally passable, and overall it's a cheaper alternative to the $20 replacements on eBay. Note that this is only for gen 6 models with Windows Hello and the 1440 display, I don't have any other versions of this laptop to test it on but I at least know the lower-end models without Win Hello need a different sized opening for the camera.

Notes:

  • Print in PETG or better, PLA is too brittle and heat-sensitive for this use-case.
  • A smooth PEI build plate is highly recommended to replicate the texture of the rest of the case, but it's not a requirement.
  • You will need adhesive and the original bezel's camera and activity light lens to complete the install. I used this 2mm phone repair tape to install the bezel pieces and its holding up great.

How To Install:

  • Remove old bezel, its adhesive is relatively weak so it can be removed by just peeling off slowly. Try not to crack the camera lens, be extra careful around that area!
  • Take the camera and activity light lenses from the old bezel and install them on the new one with tiny drops of superglue.
  • replicate the adhesive placement on the original bezel as best you can, and reapply. Start with the top half first to make sure the camera lens is properly lined up, then go to the sides before doing the bottom one last. The new bezel had to be split into 4 parts as it's too big for standard build plates, but this is hardly noticeable when installed on the device and doesn't affect how well it holds the display in.

Enjoy! I wasn't adventurous enough to try a different color, but feel free to mix and match!
