Description
Ever wanted a really big corner shelf to put junk on? Don't want something that looks good? This shelf is for you!
I spent about a week designing this, including printing the whole thing out only to realize I had screwed up probably 10 or 20 things and ended up trashing my whole approach and remaking it - over and over. So much work for what is essentially half a cube and two planes.
The structure is made such that the strut running up through the top shelf from the bottom shelf is under tension and supports both shelves. I used pins to attach the lower shelf to the lower strut, and more pins to simultaneously hold the two back panels together and secure the upper strut. Everything needs glue or it'll fall apart in your hands:
Glue the struts.
Glue the pins.
Glue the struts to the shelves.
Glue your hand to the shelf.
Screw the whole construction to the wall. Don't use glue for that.
There are little holes in the top and bottom of the lower and upper struts, respectively. You can get a little bit more strength if you stick something in these holes to bridge between the struts. It'll put the tensile stress in shear across the pins or toothpicks or whatever you stick in there, instead of it being mostly direct tension on whatever off-brand glue you used.
The shelf as-built is supposed to be painted with something like Modern Masters Metal Effects Iron Oxidizing paint. If you've never used this, it contains iron dust and when exposed to a rusting solution, it'll rust right up and look exactly like real rusty iron. I'll eventually post photos of the finished product, if I don't go insane or die from paint fumes before then.
I realize I'm a talentless hack, but maybe someone will like this or remix it to be good. I don't know. I feel like I spent too much time making this to NOT release it.
