The most well-known wall organizer, IKEA Skädis, has met its own evolution.

First things first — I really love Skädis for its easy-to-use design and the handy supply of accessories you can print. BUT what really grinds my gears is that almost every model out there takes an unbearable amount of time and material to print.

So I started thinking about how to optimize its design and construction in favor of printing time and material usage. And the answer was simple — SPIRAL MODE.

But that comes with a problem: how do you design something that complex so it can be printed in spiral mode? So for the last three weeks, I’ve spent my free time designing one. And now I’m proudly presenting to you the first spiral-mode Skädis.

Key features of my approach:

• Base plate printed in spiral mode
• Lightweight yet sturdy (can hold up to 3 kg / 6.6 lbs)
• Quick printing time — 11 minutes (80×80 mm version)
• Only 3 m of filament (approx. 7 g)
• Snap-fit connectors
• Easy to use

Here is a comparison with other similar lightweight designs that still require a lot of time and material.

During the testing phase, I encountered several issues, but one of the most significant was material choice. I would not recommend any PLA-CF due to its fragility and poor layer adhesion.

A good option is standard PLA or PLA+, which are both usable. However, the best option in my experience is Bambu’s own PLA Tough+, which is my recommendation.

From my experience, the recommended filament for this print is definitely Bambu PLA Tough+, and here are a few technical reasons why:

Generally speaking, PLA Tough+ and PLA+ offer significantly better layer adhesion and toughness, which are very important for overall strength.

Personally, I recommend printing a few 80×80 mm test pieces and seeing what works best for you.
